An old town with old trees
Sidney Ketchum founded Marshall in 1830 with his brother George; it became a village in 1836 and a city in 1849. Settlers named it for Chief Justice John Marshall. The Marshall Historic District is one of the country's largest architecturally significant National Historic Landmark Districts, with more than 850 buildings, the Honolulu House among them.
Storm debris in Marshall
After the February 2023 ice storm, the Battle Creek Enquirer reported 923 Consumers Energy customers in Marshall still out two days later. The city's storm pickup asked for brush at the curb by 7 a.m. Monday, with limbs under 4 inches in diameter and no longer than 6 feet. Check Marshall's announcements after any future storm, since rules can change.
Which rules apply
Marshall is its own city; ask its offices about contractor licensing and trees in the right-of-way. MISS DIG 811, the DNR's oak dates and the utility's line rules apply here too.
