Not every tree needs to come down. Taking out dead limbs, lifting branches off a roof, or thinning a crown can be enough. Around Battle Creek, the species can decide when it's safe to cut.

Oaks: wait until mid-July
The Michigan DNR asks people not to prune oaks from April 15 through July 15. Fresh cuts attract the sap beetles that carry oak wilt spores, and the infection risk is highest in May and June. If an oak gets wounded in that window, the DNR says to paint the wound right away with tree-wound paint or latex paint, but not to paint wounds on other species, since it can slow their healing.
For everything else, timing is about access and the job, not disease. More detail on oaks is in the oak wilt guide.

Branches over your service line
Consumers Energy trims around its distribution lines but leaves trees near the service drop (the wire from the pole to the house) to the owner, and recommends hiring a qualified tree company. The utility can schedule a temporary disconnect for the work. See trees near power lines.
Licensing applies to trimming too
Battle Creek's Chapter 860 license covers the business of trimming trees, not just removing them. The city's license page asks for liability insurance whose description of operations includes both tree trimming and tree removal.
The branches afterward
The city's curbside program takes branches cut to 4 feet or shorter and tied in bundles of no more than 50 pounds, on your regular collection day during the season (April 6 to December 4 in 2026).
